Return Due Dates Changed in Highway Funding Bill
By James L. Oslin, Jul. 31st, 2015

The highway funding bill recently passed by Congress changes certain tax filing due dates. These changes address concerns raised by the AICPA and CPA practitioners that theprevious due dates didn't work well for the taxpayers (or preparers either). The significant  changes are:

1.  Partnership returns will now be due March 15th (or the 15th of the third calendar month following the partnerships year-end. Previously the due date was April 15th. An up to six month extension will be available.

2. C-Corp returns will be due April 15th ( or the 15th of the 4th month following the C-Corp year-end.

3. The due date for FinCEN Form 114 is changed from June 30 to April 15, and for the first time taxpayers will be allowed a six-month extension.

The changes generally take place for tax years beginning after December 15, 2015 which means generally the 2016 returns will be the first ones with the new due dates.
